I had the positive cable from the alternator short out into my header.
Now power is completely dead in my car.
If I run a line from the positive connector on the alternator to the positive voltage regulator output connector on the alternator, then power is restored & I can start the car.
Is there a fusable link somewhere that could be blown? Any other ideas?
(This is on my Mako, which is a 73, but has a 1980 wiring harness and interior)

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

I'm not positive, but I think there is an inline fuse between the battery, and starter. Not sure where though. I looked in my assembly manual, but couldn't find any info on it. You might look under the car, and find the wire, and follow it to see if there is any burnt spots on it.

There is a fusible link that has blown. These links are not hard to find as they typically are near the alternator and regulator. They look like a fat wire and the insulation is rubbery. Many times the link looks like a spliced in peice. Usually, the insulation is burnt away and the "open" is visually obvious. However, using a pin to peirce the insulation you can find out if there is power at each end of the link.
You should get a copy of your wiring diagram from Lectric Limited or some other source prior to doing much more in the way of troubleshooting. Then, at the very least, a tech can walk you through the problem if you are unfamiliar with electrical systems and theory.
I may also have a faxable copy if you need. They may come out hard to read as the print is small.

I've got all the manuals & diagrams and a strong grasp of electrical systems. I was just hoping that someone would be able to instantly know the weakest link based on the info I provided.
I'll track it down when I have more time. More important things call right now...
