Don't know about the earlier models, but on the 80's, there are 4 screws that hold the face plate on just above the steering column.

Happy to have found this thread! On the way back from the 50th party last summer the odometer quit working (could never get the tripmeter to reset even though it was working when the odometer was working). The speedo still works but is a little bouncy so sounds like a project to tackle before drive-time comes around for good this season.
Thanks for the info gang...!!!

Be careful in there, man. Just finished some rework on my speedometer last month.
More to do, though.
Most of the little gears and pinions in the odometer assemblies are metal.
However, one notable exception is the main drive cross shaft.
I'm not talking about the driven cross shaft that the number reels are mounted to. I'm talking about the shaft behind the jewel cup (this cup actually propels the speedo needle). That is the sucker that's directly driven by the speedo cable, and it is plastic.
The teeth on that little dude may be worn out - as in worn off. If you replace it yourself use extreme care in the reassembly. The pinion shaft that is run from it is metal and it will shred the cross shaft if you don't mesh them carefully.
Trust me on this one. I learned all this the hard way.
I know this all may sound just a little confusing, but it will make perfect sense when you open up the speedo.
Good luck. Be patient.
John
