Topic: Oil Pressure - No Start Hot - Sending U
in Forum: C3 Electrical
82 Crossfire. Here's one for anyone who has had a phantom "hot no start". First let me note that this car ALWAYS starts - hot, cold, wet, dry. Always.
I show hardly any oil pressure on my electrical gauge. It goes to full scale when I disconnect the plug from the switch/sending unit so I assumed it was the sending unit. I bought a new sending unit and installed it. It is a combo unit with a switch that controls the fuel pump, and a stat of some sort to control the oil pressure gauge. Ok. It went in with the usual gymnastics around the distributor, and all the little brass fittings and elbows to get it clear (can never get everything tight, but it doesn't leak oil). Car starts fine and still hardly any reading. Now I know (think) it's the gauge, but decided to leave the new sending unit in place. The next few times I'm out, I cannot get the car to start after it has been warmed up. I have to wait until it cools a while. This happened again while I was under the hood recharging the A/C and much warmed up, so I guessed it must be the sending unit unit. I pulled it and put the old one back. No more problems - 'cept the barely reading gauge. Oh yeah - a mechanical guage stuck in the oil temp spot by the oil filter shows great pressure at all rpm's.
If you are having starting problems, and have this setup, here's one more area to check. I thought I'd pass this along, since it's always a PIA to find these phantoms.
Now off to the oil pressure gauge - I HATE pulling that instrument panal I think it might be the little resistor so I gotta go in there and check.
If anyone has any suggestions, pass 'em along. Also, I never run out of gas, since the gas gauge stops at half full and never lower. Got a great little stick that is pretty accurate, though. You can bet I'll keep using that stick, too, since 82 fuel sending units are too pricey for this old guy.
Off to Bowing Green this weekend (~500 miles). Hope the rain holds off......
