If your battery is getting hot, especially after the engine has been running, I would look in to over charging. If the system is working correctly, it will sense the battery voltage and charge accordingly. Once the correct voltage is reached, then the voltage output from the alternator is decreased via the voltage regulator. If the voltage regulator isn't working correctly, then your alternator will continue to "charge" your battery. It seems as if in your case, it is charging the battery at a higher rate than it should. You can check the voltage out with a multimeter. I'm not 100% sure of what the charging voltage should be, or what the normal voltage should be(usually around 13.5V DC).If you have a manual on your vette, it will be in there. You can probally take it to autozone, O'Reilly's or Advance auto and have them check it for you. It's free to have them check it and they will be able to look up the correct voltages. Since the battery is located "inside" and not outside, I would really have this fixed, as I don't know if you have seen the damage of a battery blowing up, but I have. It's not very pretty and very dangerous.
