I'm considering installing a capacitive ignition on my '69. I recently removed the factory radio and heat sink for a CD/stereo so the location behind the right dash formerly occupied by the heat sink looks like an ideal place to mount a CD ignition box.

I know MSD seems to be the most popular CD ignition, but Mallory, Crane, Accel and others make them as well. Does anyone here have any knowledge of which, if any, is substantially better than the others or which is the best value for dollars spent? They are all in the same dollar range, so I'm just trying to determine which way to go.

Thanks in advance for my tapping everyone's knowledge and experience.

I used to work for Mallory, was the lead in the Tech dept. They used to be the best. When I left, I got a new distributor and promaster coil for my Vette. It wasn't two months before the coil shorted out. It kinda hurts to say it, but Mallory quality back then has gone down hill. Super Shops use to own Mallory and  they along withe ASAP, another catalog sales company, caused Mallory to fall behind in product development and quality due to cashflow situations. They use to rule Top Fuel and Funny Car, but it's all MSD now. I have just heard that the Carson City location, the home of Mallory may close in two years. I don't know if they are relocating or just closing, I'm sure it's a corp. thing. Now, I use a MSD dist, Holley Strip Annihilater cd box and coil. Holley quit the Annihilater line, don't know why, it works great for me. If I had to go buy all new stuff, I'd go with MSD. The altered I pit for had all Mallory, but we switched to MSD due to reliability factors.

Not at all unusual, Ben. The mag pickup seemed to hold up better, it was a Ford pickup used, back then, but one had to run a box with it.
