You will have to remove the center cluster to get the gauge out. Don't know how much different the '82 is from the earlier cars, as far as removing the cluster, but it just involves removing everything that holds it in.
After you get the cluster out of the "dash" area, you can remove the back of the gauge cluster, and then the gauge you want to replace. You may find a problem with the "circuit board" back there. Just a fancy, flexible wiring board. We see a lot of problems with the circuit boards loosing contact in some areas, as well as breaking. Check it well.
Be sure to mark any wires/connectors, and/or take photos. Patience is your friend.

Pull out the sender you installed and be sure the little hole is not plugged on the sender - I replaced mine with a new one and all was well then dropped to almost no reading at all; I removed it and there was a little glob which I think was the thread sealer that was on the sender threads. Once removed, oil dripped out, I reinstalled and now have correct oil pressure reading. I ALMOST bought a new gauge and circuit board!
Good luck!
Good luck!
On my '80, I had to replace the circuit board. Easy to do. 4 screws on the sides of the center upper console, two more where the two console pieces meet and two at the top.
The circuit board is the flexible green stuff with the brass inlaid into it. Actually a pretty cool design if you study it for awhile. Kinda like the find your way out of the maze stuff from Highlights magazine when we were kids.
Anyway, I digress. Make sure all the brass traces are there and not broken and that the green stuff (technical term) is still malleable and not hard or broken. The gauges on mine had two either nuts or small screws into a bracket that holds them in their opening. Just remember how the wires come off if there is more than one to the gauge.
Good Luck!!!

Distributor has an pern upgrade
I removed the instrument cluster in my 77 last year. Be real gentle with the circuit board. They become brittle with age. Actually an easy job if not for that.
