I can hear the motor activating and running but the antenna stays up all the time. it worked a month ago, and it's not a huge deal as I use an iPod for my music all the time but I would like it to work properly. any hints?

You need a new mast/cable. The cable is broken.

I wait for the antenae motor to stop running...then I manually push the antenae into the car so no stupid teenager snaps it off. When I turn the car on the antenae goes up....it is only the retractng that and is not working.....does this fit with the original diagnosis you all gave me?

Yup...the mast cable is broken, most likely at the top end. This will still push the mast UP, but not pull it back down. Ouch

Update......antennae went down 95% the other day....fiddled with it while turning key on and off.....touch the top of the antennae ever so slightly and it will retract most of the time. It always comes up no problem its only retracting this an issue. and when I say I touch it ever so slightly I mean So Soft a tap on top of that it wouldn't turn a light switch.

The cable is bad if you can hear the motor run, but the mast will not retract. If you can't hear the motor run, there is an internal problem with the motor. Either way, it'll need to be removed to repair. Ouch
