Just finished up replacing the plugs and wires on my 1979 L48, was not ready for just how difficult that is!

Spent about an hour trying to figure out how to get the wires for 1-4 through the engine mounts before I realized that you can pull the boots off :)

Also, pro-tip for anyone doing this job... don't fully remove the bolts on the retaining clips for the front two cylinders, you only have to loosen them enough to rotate the clips 45 degrees so you can remove/replace the wires. Putting those screws back in represents another hour I will never get back!

I dropped out the starter motor in order to get at the boomerang shield on the passenger side, and in the process removed the screw holding on the plug shield for #6 and #8. When it came out, this piece of metal fell on my face... I don't think it was attached with the screw, it seemed more like it was just sitting on top of the shield, possibly dropped there during a previous maintenance. Can anyone identify what this is?

That's one of the valve cover hold downs for steel valve covers. It helps distribute the clamping force of the bolts, to help keep from distorting the valve cover.

For your next test, plugs and wires on a Big Block. That L-48 will seem like a breeze.

When I changed my plugs, I removed the shields around the plugs and put them in a box so the next owner can put them back on.  Beer
