Under the hood, there is a harness going across the engine at the firewall.
there is a connection just about center. this connection may be the culprit. I had the same problem start, no start. I made a small jumper wire for the  connection to get the car to start. Some one else prolly can give you the correct wires to jump. Anyway. Thats my story, and I'm stickin to it.

Would be very intrested in what connection that is.  When I restored the car and we started the engine again after all the work was done on it I had a connection in that area that smoked and melted.  I had to to a jumper outside of the connection.  Very interesting you are bring this up?  The connection was left of center if you were standing in front of the car.  I may have to fine it again and see what type of condition it is in.Thumbs%20Up

Had a similar problem with the '76...not starting when "hot"(after driving a while)... I could 'cross' the solenoid and it would start... traced it down to a bad/corroded neutral-safety switch for an automatic tranny.  Does get a lot of heat under the console in the tranny tunnel.... just a thought, and another place to look at....

Thanks for your help Jim, I will keep this in mind also as I go down this road I am on the find my problem.  Need to find it, very tired of it.  Other than that the car has been holding up very good for the little driving time on it.  I don't let it sit no more than two weeks at a time.  Had a L82 when I was single, married now and had this great idea in the early 90's to restore one.  Over 16K and many years I still can put a lot of money in this car.

Update as of 18 Jun 07:

hooked up "S" terminal test wire, checked all connections on solenoid, removed battery cut off switch and did not hook-up radio amp lead.

Ran 20mins, radio on, no amp and AC on.  Volts drop as low as 5V when driving or at idle.  Shut off, 7v at sol, re-started 6 times.  Need to drive longer I think, did not have the time this weekend.

This was happening to my '79 for a long time. No one seemed to know what the exact cause was. So I bought a new starter and it has not happened since. :-/

Drive the car then return home and park it next to your garden hose.

IF it will not start ..take the hose and squirt a little stream of water oin the solenoid for 203 minutes....hump in the car and try to start it...1

IF it starts (and I bet it will) the problem is heat soak and the quyickest way to CURE it is just to spend 5 bucks and get a light weight solenoid..AC Delco part number 1958679   (if they still make the darn thing...)

EVERY one of my c3's have had this problem and I replaced the spring in all of them and NECVER had the problem again...

Got the info & part number 10-15 years ago from a crew chief of a World of outlaw car... SHE knew her stuff....!

Had the same old problem and it was heat soak. I did have a bad wiring harness on the starter which I replaced with new OEM harness AND installed an aluminum sandwich shield over the starter - I  it got from I think MidAmarica or Ecklers. This carried me through last summer her in Phoenix with no more problems, BUT the ugly heat soak beast has returned this year, only when the outside temp in above 108 - we have too many days above 110.... Next step in a reduction gear mini starter which I hear will solve this problem for good! I have seen them sold for around $140 - thats a good investment!
Good Luck!!

Thanks guys, all good advice.  May try the water, good tip.  Could not duplicate, CND as we say in the Air Guard/Air Force last time a ran it.  Will drive it longer next time, hopefully it will not start and I can put this problem to bed.  I don't want to just put new parts on the car and the problem is still there.  Will keep you posted.  Thanks again for all the help.

Joe

Removed the battery cut-off switch off the postive termial.  I have driven the car over four times and it has not given me a problem.  Need to do a very long trip, that will be the tell tale.  A buddy of mind recommended putting the battery cut off on the negitive battery termial.  Voltage at "S" termial did not seem to be an issue at all.  Left the wire connected incase the problem shows up again.
