O.K.
The old Guru arrived and we found the Q-jet has, in the past encountered an inexperenced technician fiddling around with it and even-tho the carb was cleaned up very nicely there were a few things outta whack. We disected it a little bit and now it's "pro-grade".
The engine still fluttering at all r.p.m.'s....(I just got a free breakfast). We started pulling wires out of the distributor one at a time and boy did the neet old Vette really stumble because then it was only firing on six. But......when we pulled #2, no change in idle,no stumble, hmmmmm?
We pulled the spark plug (new), grounded it, cranked the engine over and got spark....hmmmmm???
We get ready to run a compression test on #2 while visions of "rebuild" dance in my head......!!
Compression reading 135 psi on #2. I believe that's pretty good for 51,000 miles.
We were already running overtime on our other weekend activities and besides a typical midwest spring storm hit. My partners ran for their truck and I ran and hid with a cold one.
Wednesday we'll look inside that evil distributor.
Ideas and opinions are certainly in order here....Let's here it guys...this otta be good !!

Start her up at night and see if ya get a light show. If the cap is cracked, you will.
I replaced the cap and bug, coil pack and the metal plate thingie (technical term) that plugs into the cap. Still no effect.
Then I got the MSD Streetfire Distributor and everything ran great!. I had basically the same issue on a fresh rebuild with the old distributor. Once the change, it runs great! (Except that it's been in for paint since January, I hope to drive it before winter).

See if #2 wire is shorting out near metal on the engine. Night time is a good time for this too.

Tuesday night I think i'll have time to pop the hood and lurk around in the dark. Sounds like Joel may be onto it. The plug fires outside it's invironment but getting fire in the hole could be a different story.
The old Delco probably needed to be replaced shortly after the car was built. Twenty-nine years later is probably enough.
A new MSD sounds pretty good right now...but, it must include one of those metal plate thingies dnv. is talking about,.....we'll see maybe Wed.
Thanks everybody !!!
O.K. guys....
I went to the dark barn tonight for the light show. Boy !! It's scary out there in the dark. I swore I saw Jason looking in the window. I heard an Owl hoot and a Coyote yap.....jeez, I gottta get back to the house real fast. The old dog didn't want to come with me either. He knows better!
Well, I whipped out my trusty flashlight, reached in and turned the key......."wow", it started like a new injected C6. It ran perfect, no missing, no shaking, and no light show. Thought about taking it for a night run but thought better of it. The fender mats are full of tools, it's about 45 degrees out and the tops are up on the shelf. Besides, the hockey-masked maniac might still be out there
.

Seriously, earlier today I removed the bonnet on the old Delco Remy and it looked pretty good inside, alittle "seasoned" but nothing looked bad.....(like i'm an expert or someth'n). I put the same plug back in #2 and secured all wires.
Wife called for supper, so I decided not to start it till dark expecting a pretty light show but, it didn't happen. The car behaved perfectly.
In my opinion, sounds like there's a weak spot in the ignition system that's barely alive. This is what some of you phine pholks have suggested...I think Joel hit upon it first.
Lets see,,,MSD $308.00. Street wires $90.00 with all the other stuff yikes...probably about $500.00. A nice set of new GM wires might do the trick (50 bucks). Not street savy stuff but, neither am I.....(any more)
Whadda ya think guys; am I up the wrong tree?
