I needed to replace a directional bulb in the dash, so while I had it apart I figured I would change all of them. The Tach removed easily but when I attempted to remove the speedometer it appeared "stuck". (all the retaining bolts are removed), and I don't want to force it out. Any suggestions?

Take the dash top off & you should be able to reach the bulb in question. If you want to remove the speedometor you have to unscrew the cable. You you do take of the dash top make sure it's warm 80 degrees + so it will bend slightly. You will also have to drop the steering column to remove the left dash console.

the dash of a 78 is made out of one piece so it will be a heck of a job to take it off.
if you can put your hand behind the speedometer you can "lift" the clip (very easily) that locks the cable onto the speedometer .
when you are lucky you can manouvre the the rest out of the dash.
else lower the steeringcolumn
you can try to push the speedo cable already a bit on the firewall on engine side to gave it extra space  to get your hand behind the speedo to unlock that "clip"

good luck

I've had the cluster out of my '78 a few times and it's not that tough. You simply have to be careful (small hands are a big help as well).

There's a small panel beneath the steering wheel that holds the headlight manual open switch that has to be removed. Unbolt the steering column so it can be pushed down a bit. Take the screws out of the clear lanel and remove it and then you can take the screws out that hold the cluster in. Pull the guage pod out a bit and slip your hand behind it and remove the speedometer cable. After that it just slides out.

Just be careful. Replace all the light bulbs while you have it out...they're all the same age. You don't want to this any more often than you have to.

On my 78 the speedo cable is long enough to be disconnected after the panel is partially removed  (if not loose it from the tranny to give it more room. That darn electrical cable connection is what always gives me trouble as it is precisely the exact length and has to be unsnapped before anything moves). I use 2 putty knives on the edge of the cluster as it tends to hand-up on the console covering.
