Vette(s): 1977 L-82 originally white/buckskin interior.
Currently undergoing a frame-off resto. and modifications.YEEHAW!!!
If it won't start, bang the starter with a hammer, that's the old timers quick fix for a Chevy starter. It works almost every time.
Then go home, and change the starter.

You might try installing one of those starter heat shields. I had a similar problem with mine a few times and that cured it, well maybe not cured it but it stopped giving me problems!

Keeping the heat away from the starter is a cure. When the starter gets too hot the insulation on the windings break down and shorts. When it cools it sets back up and insulates again. Weird but true.
Any car with headers should probably have a starter heat shield.

Vette(s): 75 coupe being restored. engine rebuilt & complete interior resto with interior color change. more when i get it together. i am not going original as over my head, too expensive and i'd rather drive than tinker. thats to frustrating for me.
I finally had some time and it stopped raining, so I put some time into the repair! I changed the battery, cleaned all the connections and had the starter tested. No problems with the starter, and when I put in a new battery she started fine. The old battery works in my other car, just not strong enough for the Vet I guess! Thank-You everyone for your suggestions, "They Worked"!

battery is usually the first thing you should load test..
congrats on finding.
I would still get the heat shield for the starter. It's cheap insurance.
