Topic: Testing electric cooling fan 82
in Forum: C3 Electrical
If your auxiliary electric fan kicks on while the engine is running, then you have reached 238 degrees F. You really don't want that. There are fan switches out there that have a lower temp rating to turn the fan on sooner. I have a 224 deg. switch in mine.
Check the fuse first. If good then unplug the wire from the fan switch on the passenger side cylinder head and ground it out on the engine. The fan should run. If it don't kick on then use jumper wires and apply battery voltage to the fan motor. If it still don't kick on the motor is bad. If it does then there is a problem with the wiring.(highly unlikley)

Craig, just don't say what the true meaning of a Sarge is. I used to get my butt chewed for calling and NCO that. That was when I was an enlisted member and played dumb.
There are Fan switches that kick on sooner. They are offered by different companys, i.e. Mid America, Eklers, etc. I got one at NAPA w/ corresponding pigtail for about half the cost of theirs. The only big difference is theirs kicks on at around 205 deg. and the Napa one I have kicks in at 224 deg. I personally don't want that fan kicking on all the time. Only as a backup when really needed. I can look up the NAPA #'s if you are interested.

I used to get my butt chewed all the time. Still do, and I've been out of the service for over 35 years.....
I'm just going to temporarily bypass the switch to test the fan and make sure it works, then assume everything else is okay. I don't want it running, either, unless absolutely necessary. I have worked it pretty hard in the heat with the A/C running, etc., and never had an overheat, so I'm not worried. Just was curious.
Thanks for the help and offer. See ya down the road. Craig
