Is it possible for a w/s wiper motor to short out over the winter? I hooked up the battery and SMOKED the ground wire to wiper motor. I unhooked it and started the car with no problems. DEAD short melted the ground wire. Mark THANKSmanchestershark 2010-05-25 08:28:21

Since it happened, it must be possible, but it is certainly not typical. It seems odd that the ground wire would melt rather than the power wire. I would check to see if there is another ground that is bad, so the power tried to flow through the wiper ground instead. You know the rule: "If you have electrical problems on a Corvette, check the grounds first."

The wiper motor will always have power to it...the switch on the dash controls the ground side of the circuit. You didn't mention which ground wire that the smoke came out of, but I assume it is the short one that attaches to the w/w motor frame?
Sounds to me like the wiper motor itself is bad, but anything can happen....
