Topic: Want to replace my Battery
in Forum: C3 Electrical
Dave ,
1200 watt??? that's 1.63 BHP....that's 1% of those on the rear wheels....keep that radio shut off in the 1/4 mile !
Barry,
It's going on a houseboat, not the 'Vette..... It should make a few waves. Gotta get over the sound of twin 454 big blocks. Hopefully you will be able to hear it over there in Belgium!!
Here is the 1/4 mile ride.....

Actually I used a marine "starting" battery. They seem to hold up better for some reason, the deep cycle I know would be bad for a car system.
So, what's the difference between a starting and deep cycle? Internal constuction I am sure.....

Blu72,
Marine starting(cranking) batteries, are really nothing more than a standard battery with marine posts... a car battery... the plates are the same(thin plates) as a car battery, whereas a deep cycle battery has thicker plates, which allow it to be discharged and recharged. I'm sure you've seen some batteries somewhere that are "dual purpose" cranking/deep cycle. Umm, this doesnt work.. cant have it both ways, though some starting batteries, if heavy enough can have a decent amount of reserve, but if discharged over and over it will eventually fail(in a shorter time than a deep cycle battery).
Continuing Battery Class, 101 :) pop quiz anyone??
Sorry Dave , didn't see the word "flybridge".... i'm building a sailing boat myself so i will have enough with 120 watt....
WHAT ? 2 BB ?? not for Belgium gasprices....
I had a Sea Ray 26 with one SB ( OMC) and that was enough ....fuelling at 100 gallon a time..Once with the boat on my trailer in a gas station there was a alarm because those pumps with gas wheren't used to give THAT amount in one time....
Nice 1/4 mile ride... but are your tyres smoking or the exhausts ?
And for the marine batterys.... yeah, great discussion .What i know is some marine have better isolation plates between the active plates and the gel - ones instead of acid are better for gas evaporation. But again more expensive and some tests show here you are better of buying every 2 year a new standard car battery than hoping your expensive marine one will last 4 years....
In my boat goes a 24V 600 AH battery( dry cells of 2V ) , professional and garanteed for 20 years !!! if loaded with their equipment ( regulator after alternator and battery charger from 220V power) and for starting engines the Optima's.I need that heavy battery so i can make 220V with inverter enough for cooking , bilge pumps etc.and i don't need the generator every time...
You have sure got that right about gas pricing and consumption with 2 BBs (700 HP combined).... Marina gas prices here are about $3.30/ gal. The boat runs about 8 MPH (13 KPH) @ 1500 RPM and gets about 1 MPG (238 litres/ 100). I don't go very far or very fast anymore..... The 8500 KW generator burns about 1.6 LPH when I use it.
What are fuel prices in Belgium now?? Our highway fuel prices are around average $2.20/ gal. ($0.58/ litre) in Tennessee now. Marina prices have always been outrageous.
That is tyre smoke!!!! Exhaust is clean....
I forgot, your inverters are 220 V. Ours are 110 so your 600 AH is about equal to 1200 AH @ 110V. Stingray's post on battery info is very informative....
Now back to car batteries....
Dave
Dave,
i find here that a US gallon = 3.785 liters.
So whe pay 5.9 $ a gallon !!!
I went alot fishing up the Goote Bank , some 14 miles from harbor Blankenberge with the Sea Ray and that was just 75 liters to go and back. Equals 117 $ gas...Ok , once i had 80 fish , but also 5 ones... that's 20 $/fish of a hand great...
nono, the sport counts ! OFCOARSE!
Now with my sailing boat i use 'red' gasoline as for house heating for the 2 diesels and generator. That's around 0.5$/litre ( 1.9 $/gallon) so that's cheaper... but "they" are speaking of boats to have to be using the 'white' gasoline as on the roads...again 1.3 $/litre... But there's always the problem of international waters : 12 miles out our coast whe use red ofcoarse!
because no governement can claim taxes on your fuel in international waters !!!!
So on our ferry's casino's open beyond the 12 mile zone.TAXES ?
I'm guessing that I've been buying a decent Delco over the years, marine starting and regular for the cars.
Just by chance, I opted for a sale item, supposed to be good for 72 months, but failed in 6 months, so a free replacement, yes I went back to the Delco..... Don't see them much anymore, they are hard to find except at Pep Boys....
The boat battery I replace every five years just because I don't want trouble. The last one I stuck in the truck after five years and it's still going now into 6 ......even though it sat every winter and used somewhat in the summer. Probably jinxed it now......
Great battery info guys...yes maybe a quiz is in order here!
