Anyone identify this wire - in engine compartment, dark brown, goes from firewall main connector on driver side to over near the fan. It is not connected to anything and I cannot find a home for it. Bubba has had a go at this wiring sometime and I want to sort it out.

Only brown wires I can think of from the bulkhead connector are for the headlights, and the alternator. I'll look deeper later, if no-one else has an answer for ya.
There is a brown wire(fusable link) that comes from the starter to the horn relay on the ds fenderwell...

The schematic in the Corvette Repair Manual show two brown wires comining out of the firewall block with one going to the alternator and the other going to the front turn indicator lamps and front side marker lamps.

Sorry guys, I examined the rest of the wire down to the bulkhead and the color is actually tan. For some reason it had discoloured (discolored for you in the US) badly and appeared dark brown.  I think it may be the idle stop solenoid wire according to the diagrams, but I have no idea what that does. The car has a quadrajet carby and performer manifold.
Thanks for your input.
Jeremy

There are 3 tan wires...
One to the idle stop solenoid, one to the brake warning switch(on the proportioning valve), and the one for the fresh air door in the hood.
The "idle stop" solenoid is used to keep the engine idle at normal idle speed. When the key is turned off, it retracts, and drops the throttle blades on the carb completely closed. This helps keep the engine from "dieseling" when shut off. On earlier cars, this solenoid was used to raise the idle speed when the A/C was on.
