I agree that the tach will work without a tach filter, but it does receive voltage spikes from the distributor without the filter in place and that can shorten the life of the circuit board. My recommendation is to install a tach filter, it's a lot cheaper and easier to do then the eventual replacement of the tach board.

Try ECKLER'S (www.ecklers.com)
For 1975-82 Tachometer Circuit Boards
Part # 36963 1975-77 = $ 59.99 ea.
Part # 36964 1978-79 = $ 59.99 ea.
Part # 36965 1980-82 = $ 59.99 ea.
Ask Eckler's for a catalog (free)tel. (800)327-4868
I hope these helped.

The first question I posted after joining c3vr was what made my tach needle go crazy under hard acceleration. I had replaced the tach board, from MidAmerica, twice, because their tech told me I must have received a bad board so they sent me another which produced the same results. I got the filter from Rodney Dickman as suggested by a c3vr member, looks just like the photo above, but it made the needle steady as can be.
