Frank,
When they run, do they continue to run until you turn them off or do they turn off by themselves?
I would look for a loose connection. When they won't run, do a continuity check.

Aren't they supposed to do that? Isn't that what they meant by intermittent wipers? (kidding)
I would check the ground and as Dave said if you can get to the motor to do a continuenty test that should tell the story on the motor.Tuxblacray 2008-01-14 11:14:53

Check to see that the wiper switch itself is well grounded. This causes more problems than anything else.
IF the wipers are coming on by themselves when you turn the key on(sometimes), but the wiper switch is off, there must be a short to ground there somewhere. The wiper motor should have 12v power anytime the key is on. The wiper switch provides the grounds for the different speeds.
IF you have the intermittent/pulse wipers, there may be an issue with the module...

Mine does that sometime. Mine is because of a lose connection of the plug that is in the engine compartment on the firewall kinda by the distrubuter. I need to fix it but it only does it about once a year. Then again I don't drive it if it's supposed to rain. If it was a daily driver I'm sure it would do it more often
