I have a 1972 LS5 corvette. The problem I am having is when I cut the wipers off, the wiper door closes immediately trapping the wipers in the up position before they park. The other problem is when I use the switch under the dash to shut the wipers off when they are up so I can change the blades, this switch does not work. My question is, are these problems related, or separate, and does anyone know how I can solve the problem. Thanks, Jimmie |blinkyeyes|

Jimmie,

I think you have a combination of problems that need to be sorted out one at a time. I haven't had the "opportunity" to have to work on these sub-systems yet so the most I can offer is moral support.

But here might be a work-around for you to try in the meantime. On "The Toy" (and I'm assuming you have the same switches on your '72) there are two stalk type switches on either side of the round switch under the steering column. The right stalk switch works the wiper door, pull it down to open and push it up to lower. If the round switch won't stop the wipers mid-sequence simply turn-off the ignition once they get high enough to change the blades.

And when you need to use the wipers use the stalk switch to first open the wiper door, use the wiper switch as needed, and then close the wiper door with the stalk switch. Until you can get everything sorted out this work-around may save your wiper motor from getting fried or your wiper arms from getting bentup.

In my owners manual it mentions that the wiper door override switch can be used to keep the door in the open position while driving in light mist or drizzle so the wipers can be used at will and not have to wait for the door to open.

btw - the left stalk switch pops the headlights up without having to turn on the headlights.

Jimmie,

There is a valve under the right windshield wiper that will hold the wiper door up...until the wiper blade "parks" and presses the valve. It's the valve on the drawing below that is on the passenger side of the car with the 3 hoses attached.

My car has the same problem....I picked up a new valve from The Last Detail in Atlanta, but I've seen them in many of the catalogs.

I have a wiring diagram that shows the electrical switch under the steering column. When turned, it breaks the electrical current to the wiper motor...stopping the blades at any point. BUT...the wiring diagram is at home in Georgia...and I'm in California working this week.

Good luck,
