Help!! I have a 72 convertible. There is a real problem with the windshield wiper system in my car. My car does not have a wiper door, it was removed before I bought the car. The problem is that, the wipers turn on and off fine when the car is just started. BUT, when the car is driven for a little while, and the wipers are turned on, trying to turn off the wipers is the problem. The wipers move to park position, then they move up about and inch, then back to park. This goes on and on, until I unplug the wiper motor wires. I should also mention that the car has an aftermarket windshield washer pump. I also installed a new wiper switch at the dash, and a new switch at the wiper motor. Also the wipers only have high speed. Please if anyone has any information about this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is a set of contacts in the transmission of the wiper motor that interrupt power to the motor once park position is fully engaged. Chances are the cam that activates those contacts is a little worn and is not activating the contacts. Take the motor apart and adjust the contact arm a little to correct the problem. You will be able to figure it out once you are inside of it. If it's worn to the point where adjustment is no longer an option, you may have to replace the wiper motor. If that is the original motor you have had pretty good service life from it, really doesn't owe you much at this point.

Hi, Big Fish, I just read your reply. I will check this out. I also wonder about the ground for the wiper switch. I have read that the gauge cluster bezel provides ground for the switch. As I only have high speed at the switch, I wonder if there may be a ground problem also.

Thanks, nick's72

Nick, an easy way to tell if there is a ground problem at the switch is check to see if the panel light for the switch works. If it lights the switch is getting a ground. It is important to know if the light works both with the wipers on or off. Also check the wiring at the switch, my schematic had it wrong. The dark blue wire connects to the driver's side terminal, the light blue to the passenger side terminal, and the center terminal is black/white.
