If I drank more beer, GM's wiring would probably make more sense.

As usual I'm still working on my 69 Vette wiring. Last I posted I thought I had solved my water temp and fuel gauge problems. I'm half way there. The water temp gauge works great, but the fuel gauge does not. In the process of looking for potential causes I was looking at the wiper motor (after 3 beers) and noticed 2 black wires running into the wiper motor through a black plastic cover. I took the cover off and found the two wires weren't connected to anything, just duck taped inside the cover.

When I took the cover off the wiper motor a small metal piece that is part of the wiper arm return relay came off. Now I have two wires and a piece of the relay to figure out.

I really do need to keep quiet about these kinds of things because the wife responds by telling me that I have a masters degree in taking things apart and a 6th grade education in putting things back together.

Getting it from all sides. HELP

Well, Ken...this just ain't your day, is it?

The piece that fell out is prolly the catch for the washer pump...and it's prolly broke, so that ain't your fault.

The wiring diagram only shows one black wire at the wiper motor, and it comes from the blower motor ground. This black wire should attach to a single spade terminal on the wiper motor case. The only other black wire I can see in that area would be from the wiper relay, coming from the wiper switch...

Just curious...why are you looking at the wiper motor iffin yer fuel gauge don't work?
...just funnin with ya!

Joel,

Thanks for the info.

I've learned a lot about my car, both good and bad, from careful inspection.

Guess after looking for all the logical reasons for the gas gauge not working, I started looking at other things.

Eventually, with help from all the great people at C3VR, I'll get this thing sorted out.

Thanks again.

Just discovered that the two black wires going to the wiper motor through the black plastic cover are supposed to connect to the relay that activates the w/s washer. The relay is plastic and one of the terminals is broken.

Guess it doesn't matter since all the w/s washer tubing including the metal tubes on the winshield wiper arms is missing.

Just another winter project.

Thanks again for your invaluable assistance.

I feel your pain.  I still haven't gotten mine to work yet.  Waiting on parts.

there is common ground problems at the tank sending unit.
go underneath at the fuel tank and disconnect the main plug to the tank sender.
take a good known ground area attach a wire to it (you can use one of the studs on the back of your tail lights where a groung wire is already attached)
and with someone else watching the fuel gauge

touch the ground wire to the main wire connector for a short time and see if the fuel gauge rises...if so you now know that the fuel gauge works and the main wire going to it is good.

Now plug the main wire back on to the sending unit.

Take the same ground wire you used and make a good touch contact on the surface of the sending unit or to the steel part of the fuel line at the sending unit and hold it there... have some look at the gauge and see if it rises. Make sure that there is enough gas in the tank to move the gauge.
If it rises then you now know that there was a ground problem.

You can now make a permanent ground wire and attach it to the same steel fuel line as you used. I used a small stainlees steel hose clamp over the fuel line and spade connector on the end of the ground wire and slid it in between the clamp and line...and tightened the clamp.

If you think that you have a sending unit problem..do a resistance test. set you multi meter to ohms
attach on end to the main fuel sender post
the other end to good ground
take a coat hanger and put about a 1.5"-2" open hook on the end
take off the fuel cap and look to the passenger side inside of the tank
you will see the foat on a rod
carefully hook the coat hanger on the end and lift it up (a little tricky)
you should see the meter numbers change
if not the unit could have tarnished contacts
you will have to remove the unit and clean contacts or replace the sending unit.
good luck with your tests

BEFORE DOING THE ABOVE......I almost forgot... with the fuel gauge and main wire test MAKE sure to turn the key on. This way the send unit will have power.
BUT FIRST...If you can get to the fuel gauge back easy check first to make sure that it has power going to it.
And a the same time do a resistance test on the other wire that will be going to the fuel sender main wire.

Unplug the main wire at the sender.
Set your multi meter.
unplug the fuel gauge connector.
attach one wire from your meter to the main sender wire
and the othe wire to the wire at the fuel gauge
if your meter moves then the wire from the fuel gauge going to the fuel gauge from the sending unit is good.

NOW you can do the above steps.
