Vette(s): 1982,150K,Renegade CFI,Hooker Side Pipes,85 fuel pump,Bilsteins,HD suspension, Aluminum radiator, SharkBar/w 5-Point Restraints. 3:73 gears coming soon.
I bought 2 new tires yesterday from Firestone, Indy 500 255/70's; I have always ran Eagle GT II 255/60's and still have them in the front. The 255/70's are bigger tires (taller) and they do fit perfect in the back, but don't know how they will do in the front with clearance.
I had thought the 255/70 was an option for my 82 and other C3's as stock is 255/60. I will be doing a complete rebuild of the front suspension in two weeks including VBP's GT 460lb coils.
Does anyone else run these bigger tires on the front and back with no problems??
I loved the stock look of the Eagles, but the damm things didn't last and they are outright dangerous when the road is wet - NO grip at all!! I read/heard a lot of good about the Firehawk Indy 500's from fellow C3 guy's and decided to go with them.

Anyway, let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Hi Phil,
I'm at work and can't remember if mine are 60 or 70 series, but I do have the 255 Indy 500s all around on my '81.  No problems with rubbing anywhere.  If I have a guess, I'd say I have the 60s series.  Whichever series was the foctory option, that's what I did.  Yeah, you'll see a HUGE upgrade in wet traction.  I had 10 yr old Eagle GTs on mine and same story as you: just not safe.

The 255/70s are 2" larger in diameter than the 60s. That's a pretty big jump. I KNOW they wouldn't fit 78/79s and probably earlier.
The 80-82s did get slightly larger front wheel openings but that's still a big increase in diameter.

I tried 235/70's, to big for without rubbing. I have 225/70's on my 77. I wish I could go bigger but my tire store recommended not to. I'm satisfied, I guess. I'm wondering if anyone else with a 77 might give me some info. Thanks, Gene

Last Thursday I put Indy 255-60 all the way around, 3 days later I was throwing the 1980 around Watkins Glen. The original OEM GT's are in storage as they only had 14K on them.
I love the tires, ride is super and of course the handling was pretty darn good also. No clearance problems....even under HARD braking into a cornerLOL
I to also liked the lettering better on the Goodyears but keeping myself and the car safe won out over looks!Wink

The 255/70's I bought ARE the wrong size. I had mistaken the correct size of 225/70 stock. I had 255/60's and wanted the same. I will go back to Firestone today and have them changed to 255/60 Indy 500's.
They have a 30 day don't like return policy, so I will put it to the test as I did specify the 255/70 size. They did not even have the 1982 spec's in their data base, so the tech went with my request.
I'll post later and let you all know how the exchange goes and will also post some pics to show the difference of the 255/70 to 255/60.
Thanks!

Good luck, if they are a good dealer they should be able to that for you, what could be the down side. A restocking charge maybe?
Let us know how you make out.
