Finally got the 70 back and went to get the 255/60-15 Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires put on.
We thought to try a front one first as you could see where the tire rubbed the lower fender in front.

Sure enough it would have torn the whole front of the car off I think!
So we are going with 245/60-15.

It was good to get the car back, it was a nice day for a drive.

60 series tires weren't authorized for Corvettes until the '78 model year.  Chevrolet made some inner fender changes that allowed wider tires.  Prior to that it was a car by car thing if anything wider than a 70 series would fit.  Sagging coil springs could possibly be part of the problem as well.

Yeper, just went to Tirerack, pluged in your Vette and up came........205/75/15 Original equipment.
Bruce do you think using a larger tire then the chassis and running gear was designed for will cause any problems in wear or stress?

Be careful with the 245's. If you are turning and hit a bump, you might get a cracked fender. Gene

Thats whats wierd about the deal.
It has 255's on it. Firestone Firehawk's.

I am thinking the 245's will fit.

Time will tell!

Must be a spring thing...I ran 265-50-15 T/A's on the front of my '72 for 20 years... Looked like a slot car! Went to 235-60-15 T/A's last time I got tires just because I wanted more of a big/little look.....Run 275-50-15 on the rear. Never had a problem when I had the original rear spring, but had to get a shortened spring when I replaced it....And I am running the stock Ralley Wheels......

the 245`s wil fit. I had to drop down from the 255`s. However, if your tire pressure gets low it may catch the fender well. As I well Know. You may be a little safer though as I am using a 9inch rim instead of the stock 8.5. The 235`s would probably be a better bet. That`s where i`m going next time i need fronts..

I had to back down from the 255's too. (Couldn't even turn the wheel.) 235 75 filled the wheelwell very nicely though.

Vette(s): 1971 350 270 hp roadster millivanilli red, black interior, white rag top, white hard top, I've had it 18 years and intend on giving it to my son for his 25th birthday(another 18 years from now)
Hi Guys,
Just my 2 cents I've got 245/60/15 BFG's on my 71 roadster( I went out and looked,I guess in my old age I forgot what size they are)I had thought they where bigger but they do hit in the front a little sometimes so 235's in front will be the hot set up, just so you know  Bill

I've got a spare set of mounted 245s that came on my white 79. Changed over to the 255s. Gotta say tho, side by side they look so close, we're talking quarter inches or so. Unless you read the sidewall I bet you couldn't tell the difference.
Previous owner went from 225/70s up to the 245/60, but since the Vette had the factory fender trimming done (to accomodate the Pace Car spoilers) I had no fears going up some more to the 255s. That's when I noticed how similar the sizes were. BUT the old 245s were OLD. Less than 1000 miles on em but dated either 92 or 82.
