77 POWER STEERING

Ok guys, 77 vette, new pump, valve, cylender, and lines.  Adjusting the valve and the nut comes off and dosen't change the rod going in.  Also the fluid is geting VERY HOT!  Ideas.  Thanks guys.  Mike

A possibility is they gave you a pump for a passenger car.  They work at higher pressure, which might cause heat.

Pump came from a vett supply house.  Any other ideas?

I have pasted the installation and adjusting instructions below.  Assuming you have followed them correctly, you have at least one bad part.  Did you have this problem before replacing parts?  If so, the only part left is the ram.  If it is a new problem, the cause is either a bad pump or valve.

CAUTION. Do not restart engine with hydraulic cylinder piston rod connected to frame bracket until adjustment procedure is complete. If out of adjustment, steering wheel may turn causing injury.

 

a. Install new control valve in reverse order of removal. DO NOT RECONNECT THE PISTON ROD TO THE FRAME BRACKE AT THIS TIME. Torque pitman arm nut to 45 ft-lbs. Torque valve adapter clamp screw to 20 ft-lbs.

b. Fill system with new good grade power steering fluid. With power steering reservoir full, start engine monetarily and shut off refill pump reservoir as required. Repeat until pump reservoir level remains constant.

a Stan the engine. One of the following two conditions will exist:

1 If the piston rod remains retracted, turn the adjusting nut clockwise until the rod begins to move out. Then turn the nut counterclockwise until the rod just begins to move in. Now turn the nut clockwise to exactly one-half the rotation needed to change the direction of the piston rod movement.

2. If the rod extends upon starting the pump, move the nut counterclockwise until the rod begins to retract, then clockwise until the rod begins to move out again. Now position the nut to exactly one-half the rotation needed to change the direction of the piston rod movement. (CAUTION: Do not turn the nut back and forth more than is absolutely necessary to balance the valve, as this is a special friction nut.)

3. With the valve balanced, it should be possible to move the rod in and out manually.

4. Turn off the engine and connect the cylinder rod to the frame bracket torque to specifications

5. Restart engine. It the front wheels (vehicle still on the stands) do not turn in either direction from center, the valve has been property balanced. Correct the valve adjustment if necessary.

6. When the valve s properly adjusted, turn off the engine, and install the dust cap.

7. Turn steering wheel to full left and then to a full right turn and hold momentarily; this bleeds system.

8. Lower vehicle to floor.

d. Check for leaks and repair if required. Refill reservoir if oil level den dropped.

FINAL INSPECTION

e. Check drive belts and readjust tension, if required Replace frayed or glazed belts at this time. (A high pitched noise at the extreme end of steering wheel travel indicates a slipping belt)

d. Make sure diet the hydraulic hoses do not twist or interfere with adjoining hoses or adjacent chassis parts

Hey Mike, You have a power assist control valve.  It is located under your Vette on the left side near the tire, windsheild wiper tank, in that area. I replaced the power assist control valve on my 77, bought it at Ecklers, around $280-300. good luck. Gene
 
I just read above where this has already been explained to you, great advise. If you have a Haynes Repair Manuel, it 
explains in detail and also has a picture of the control valve location. Again, good luck. Gene
