More adds. The reason brake fluid changes color is due to the moisture content causing corrosion and rust internally. Yes the brown color is rust. Whe the fluid starts changing color, change it. Depending on where you live it could be more than 3years. My cars get fluid change every 2 years, unless the bleeders have frozen and refuse to open. But coating them with antiseize and putting some grease on them when I'm done goes a long way to keeping them working.
Keep the fluid clean, and it is rare to have caliper or master cylinder failures due to internal problems.

Dot 5 Silicone has some dissadvantages but whoa lets wait a bit before we count it out. My C3 has had it for the Last 20 Years. I live in Seattle Right next to the Ocean. The Car has been left sitting for up to 10 Years at a time with out even looking at it and when It was pulled out of Storage the Fluid looked just as good as it did when it was put in. I changed every Fluid except the Brake Fluid. If Your going to Drive Your Car only a Couple of Times a Year I don't know how You could not Use it. If Your going to Race it then maybe You Shouldn't. However I have Run the Neveda Sierra 100 and Autocross and the Dragstrip and....
Dot 5 Silicone is an excellent product for cars that are stored a lot. It does not absorb water. That keeps the rust and fluid deterioration to a minimum. But it does not perform as well in difficult driving situations. His statement of water collecting is a bit far fetched. I have not seen that happen. For me, its just a performance thing.
But consider, for normal driving, the DOT 5 is fine. In fact many goverment and post office vehicles use it as the standard brake fluid. Of course they are not supposed to be performance driven.
The other problem with DOT 5 is it does attract air, so while that is not a problem once it's in there, it often is more difficult to bleed when filling the system.
