Thinking of getting a dial indicator, with base, but not sure what I should be looking for as to quality or manufacturer. Is this a tool where qauality is dictated by price, or is there a reasonable alternative for us weekenders?

Thanks

Are you looking for a replacement original equipment type or a custom one?
The OE types are available through any of the parts houses...Corvette Central, Eckler's, Corvette America, etc. For a custom type, there are many hot rod catalogs available for street rods, customs, etc. Do a web search.

I have one made by "Central Instruments", or "Central Tool".(can't remember off-hand, and it's in my box at the storage building) I think that's the name. Seems like it was around $150. Magnetic base, with a 1 inch range.
It's probably the best, mid-range($$$) set-up there is, imo. If you have a "Northern Tool Company" in your area, I think they have them. I got mine from Crap-On, or Matco.

Hi All,
I a machinist and I check on the price of these items alot.
The Central Instruments item is very good. But, I would check out Enco. Their web site is, use-enco.com or 800-873-3626. Check the model # N505-1848. It is a mag base and indicator only for $16.95.
If you want extra points for the indicator along with the mag base and indicator, order # NP625-1340 for 18.95
