The specs according to GM were anywhere from 3 to 8 thou on the end play. Anything over 5 thou is bad. So some people bought new vettes w/bad bearing and they didn't even know it. 0 to 1/2 thou is very tight but when you start to drive the car they will loosen up about a 1 thou so you'll still be in good shape as long as you are under 4 thou when you set it up. The tighter the better.
Try Granger for you dial indicator.

Actually, Granger is right around the corner from my house. Why the hell didn't I think of that? Probably because I've never bought anything there before.
