After doing a search on the WWW with no luck,I am going to ask a question with egg on my face. Are the uper and lower a arms and the coil spring all held together with just the spindle? I don't remeber there being any bolt up stuff to hold coil spring between frame and lower A arm.

Just redid my '78. Disconnected lower ball joint. Strapped the coil to the lower control arm. Keep a jack under the lower control arm during all of this and lower it until coil is loose enough to pull out. The new 460# I got are shorter and went back in easy without compressers.

Yup thats what holds them together. Make sure you put the right ones back in place IE right on right and left on left.

As a rule, the shorter the spring (fewer turns), or the thicker the wire, the harsher the ride. I would be a little concerned about same size wire with shorter spring. It would seem the car should sit lower. At this point, the only way to tell is to put it together, then check against the dimensions in the Assembly Manual.
