I recently replaced all my Eagle GT2 (255/60R-15) with the same tires. The old tires all had tread separation; one of them was seconds from total separation on the freeway at 90mph... Strong vibration out of nowhere, immediately slowed down, pulled over to check and found the tread on the LR was trying to leave the tire, This could have been bad for both me and my 82!
So, I replaced them with the same exact tire because, I like the Eagles thick walls and sturdy construction, OEM, the cost and the Raised White Letters. The old tires still had some good tread left, but they may have been old - I have owned this vette for about 15 months and it may have been setting for awhile according to the CarFax. I just learned I could read the production date of the tires on the side wall but it's to late.
Finally.... my question is: Has anyone had these problems with the Goodyear Eagle GT2 tires? I am now concerned about the new replacements.
Thanks!!

I put the GT 2's on mine back in June and been about 2000 miles since. No problems at all.
I think just sitting in one spot for a long time not moving the car at all and age are not the best thing for tires.

probably just from sitting. mother had a car and she was like the lttle
old lady that just went to church. told me one day the car was making a
funny noise and went and checked nothing. then she said to drive it.
took it down the driveway and heard a whap. jump out and look and all
the tread was just peeling off the tires. not only did they have a lot
of tread but they looked brand new. had to replace all four.

I've had a set of GT IIs on for about 6 yrs now; thanks for the tip and heads-up. I don't drive it as much as I once did, so I'm goining to be checking those tires over a little closer before each cruise.

Thanks again for the reminder -

I used to sell tires and saw all kinds of problems over time...when I say all kinds of problems I need to temper that with the number of problems were in very small poroportion of the tires sold.
It is unusual to see all four tires have the same problem, which leads me to believe they were all from the same production lot, as well as old. If a production lot has a manufacturing anomoly, it will likely hit many, if not most tires from that lot. While they may pass all quality control checks, age and wear take their toll.
Tires will often require replacement before their tread wears out. Heat buildup changes the rubber composition...it will crack, become hard and lose its stickiness and breakdown in other forms.
Everything else being equal (which it rarely is), the tire's biggest enemy is heat. Heat builds up beyond design parameters from running too low an air pressure and extensive high speed driving. If you live in areas of the country like the southwest, heat buildup is a fact of life (places like Arizona don't have tire and battery stores on every street corner for no reason!)

the tires i had to replace were from dry rot. car was about 15
years old and only had 21,000 miles on it. they were the original tires
from the day it was bought and driven out of the dealers. lucky me she
decided not to drive anymore and now i have the car. it is 26 years
old, soon to be 27 and only has 61,000 mi. probably going to have to
replace tires again

As far as I know my Eagle GT-II's have been on the Pacer for atleast 5 years, the Vette sits most of the winter in the garage except for a monthly run round town. I also drove it to Carson City and back (some points a tad over the speed limit
) and have had no problems at all with them. I usually don't like Goodyears but I very pleased with the Eagle GT's

You know tires do come with lemons every now and then, its possible you could have gotten a bad tires or two.

I'd have to agree with the bad lot theory. I had a bronco that had sat garaged for about 5 years with new Goodyear MT's I was worried about them sitting for so long, mainly because people were warning me about flat spots, dry rot etc.. I went over to where the bronc was being stored and they were fine, didn't even lose any air, I sold them to a friend and he ran them with no issues. I asked around and was told several time that's not an issue nowadays, only on older tires. I've had nothing but good experience with Goodyear in the past, offroad, passenger and performance. Ran the shi* out of MT's on our GMV's in Afghanistan and Iraq, talk about abuse
many a time I looked in the back while driving to see joe suspended mid air waiting for the truck to come back down to earth.

I bought a set of Goodyear Eagle GT II's and the only complaint I had was they didn't last very long, wore out fast. Replaced them with Firestone Indy 500's.
I know the voices aren't real, but they have some pretty cool ideas...

Thanks for the replies! I think you are right about the bad lot and maybe just the age of the tires. No problems so far with the new GT2's.
