my first post
my baby 1980 vette red L-48 vin: 1z878as414846 , I am from Montreal , Canada.
I want to change the shocks ( 4 ) and put some KYB but not sure. need advice from experience

also I am changing the leafs and the front coils.

Hey Norm,

I replaced shocks and rear leaf last summer. Went with the KYBs all around from Mid-America. I was tempted to go with a fiberglass mono rear spring, but opted to stay with the metal one, got it from Corvette Central (hardware and bushings too). I was replacing the entire exhaust system at the same time so that made for a little more elbow room underneath.

Followed the steps outlined in Chilton's Corvette 1963-82 Repair Manual (#28500) without any real problems. The most difficult part, for me anyway, was getting the center mounting plate bolts started on the reinstall. The new spring had a lot more arch in it than the old one so had to be careful not to cross thread the bolts. I didn't want to put any tension on the spring without it being secured in the middle first. So if you can, I'd suggesst looking for some slightly longer bolts for that plate. It would make that part of the job easier.

I was under the car for most of the weekend doing all the stuff on my list, but the spring replacement took me maybe a couple of hours. I was probably being over cautious, but didn't want to have to duck out of the way of a flying chunk of metal!

I've had KYB's on my Vette for two years now.....very satisfied!
