I think they are stainless steel lined. They look like it. There isn't a speck of rest on the inside. Just nice and shiny. Its going to take me a while to do, because I'm having problems with my daily driver at the moment and that takes priority.

Man, you sound like deja-vu or something. My 79 was losing fluid from the same caliper and I am going to try the kit project too. Problem with sitting too long and poor fluid maintaince by the prior owner. I fear the liners are not stainless or pristine like yours though. I am leaning toward the silicone fluid when the r&r is complete. From what I hear, it practically eliminates the water problem in the brake system. Good luck with the rebuild and with your daily driver.

Thanks L-vira 79T. It seems like the daily driver is running well now... (crossing my fingers)... So pretty soon I'll be ordering two kits because I heard I should rebuild both at the same time. Anybody know anything that will clean off brake fluid from pads? I heard there was something, but it doesn't work all that great most of the time. I'd rather not buy new pads yet, but if that's the best thing, what pads do you guys recommend? At the moment I'm wirebrushing the frame and cleaning up all the parts in the wheelwell. I'm going to give it some rubberized undercoating before I put my rebuilt calipers back on.

just make sure it is a caliper before you go sinking money into it. A woman in our club had a similar problem and after yanking off her wheels and inspecting everything, I discovered it was the proportioning valve. just a heads up for you
Where's the proportioning valve? I checked the hose from the steel line on the frame to where it conncected to the caliper. There was no leaking from that. It was however dripping from between the caliper. That's why I figured a seal went bad. I don't know anything else it could be. The kit is cheap too. Only $10.50. The brake pads are what cost the most. That's why I want to find something that will clean the fluid off.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

The proportioning valve is located below the master cylinder, attached to the frame. I guess it could leak, but I doubt it.
When I first put new pads on my vette, for about two weeks it would squeal once in a while. After that it got quiet, and has never squealed again. They actually work better than they did before I replaced them....

The proportioning valave in my 82 is under the master cylinder down by the frame. A woman in our club has an 82 and hers is leaking from there, that's why I suggested it. If you can see moisture from the caliper, then that is most likely your problem
I have my seal kits ordered, but I didn't order new brake pads. I want to know if there is something I can use to clean them off really good before sinking $60-$70 into new pads. Anyone have any suggestions. Also, I figure now is a good time to clean up my calipers so I was wondering what the best rust removing product was? I usually just spray some WD-40 and use a wire brush drill attachment, but I was wondering if someone else had any other method??
