how do I tell whether they are regular ones, stainless, or stainless sleeved? Looking in the parts catalogs I have, the rebuild kits differ based on the type of the caliper. Dollars are a little tight at the moment so I'm going to attempt the rebuild myself rather than take them somewhere to be done.

Thanks in advance.

There's different rebuild kits??? Maybe that is why mine didn't work out too good for me. Are they original? I'm pretty sure most remanufactured calipers are now made as stainless steel sleeved. Pop a piston out and check it out. I don't know if non-stainless steel sleeved are shiny, but I bet if they are stainless steel sleeved they will be. |biggrin| Mine were. Sorry, not an expert on the make of calipers.... but I can take them off and change the lines and hoses pretty easily now.

Dale,

Took the calipers over to one of my "mentors" tonight and we're pretty sure they are original equipment, or at least correct GM replacements as there is Delco stamped on both of them. Didn't have time to pop a piston out and look inside, but my guess at this point is they are stainless sleeved.

In looking closer at the parts catalogs, the difference is in the calipers themselves, not the rebuild kits. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Anyway, looks like I'll have a good project to keep me busy over the weekend...!!!

Good luck with it. Its not a hard job. I wouldn't think twice before trying it again. It didn't work out the first time, but I think I was rushing through it and didn't do a great job. I don't think I used the proper sealant around the piston and the boot either. I think that is where a little was leaking through and by that time I'd had enough and just wanted to drive it again, so I bought all new calipers.

Just a heads up... the caliper rebuild kit is something like five dollars at your local parts store... You'll need it, I went through about 3 of them until I mastered the technique!

Hopefully I can master it in one try - the rebuild kits were like $25 each at the local NAPA store. I think I have all the parts on hand now to get the job done. May even have working e-brakes if all goes well. Now just need to make the time to get "The Toy" road-worthy again.

Thanks for the help and encouragement!

IT IS FINISHED...!!! |bouncy| Finally got everything put back together tonight. The rear calipers are rebuilt, new flexible rear hoses installed, new rotors in place, and even the parking brakes (I was informed that they are not to be called emergency brakes!) work now...!!! It was too late by the time I finished to go for a test drive so will have that to look forward to tomorrow. Now just need some sunny fall days before the snow arrives to enjoy DRIVING "The Toy" again.

Thanks Dale!

The sun was shining brightly this morning so took a short test drive - everything that I had overhauled worked perfectly...!!!
