My 71 does the same thing! When looking at the wheel and how it is aligned in the wheel arch of the fender the drivers side is definitely further forward than the passenger side. I checked the castor? shims on the front of the upper wishbone (A arm) and there is a huge amount of shims compared to the passenger side. The car has had a new nose installed (both fenders and nose) but the frame appears to have had no damage so I am assuming that it only had fiberglass damage.
Does anyone have any info on possible factory design alignment problems during manufacture as Christian is saying?
My other problem is that the ride height on the front end is about 2" too low. I'm hoping when I sort the ride height problem out the rubbing will go away. I'm also hoping that the castor angle will get adjusted to bring the wheel back similar to the passenger side.

255/60 and 255/50 are the same width..
