After installing a new park brake cable, Im still not satisfied with my park brakes.and believe the adjsuter needs to be opened up a bit. The adjuster is rusted solid and the "star wheel" will not turn. Is it possible to spread the brake shoes to remove the adjuster and reinsert it after cleaning without pulling the rest of the guts out of the park brake assembly?

You certainly could make a spreader and force the shoes apart enough to do that, but I think it is probably easier to release one shoe and do it the usual way. The only hard thing is taking the shoe off the cable, and you don't need to do that in either case.

Yeah, I'm with Larry...ya might be able to squeak it out. If not, then just taking the retainer off of one shoe should give you enough room to get it out.

I just did it. The groove on the adjuster that engages the shoe is only 3/16" deep or so. That's all you gotta spread it. Its a bit of a trick tho doing it with two hands because as you pull one shoe, the other tends to want to move with it up to 3/4" inch or so. A third hand would make it a snap. I used a screwdriver through the access hole lined up with the retainer pin to pry the shoe out far enough that I could reach in with the other hand and wiggle the adjuster out and in again.
