I'm getting ready to rebuild the rear suspension on my 81. Does anyone have a method they have used to clean up the aluminum differential housing and supports? I would like to do something to polish them up some, then clear-coat them.
Your wisdom and advice is appreciated!

Polishing the supports and/or the diff is gonna be a big job! Lots of sanding first, then the polishing that could take weeks...
(Depending on how smooth ya want the stuff)
You could just clean it to bare luminuminum, and clear it. Wouldn't be a shiny, but it would still look good. Just my opin...

After looking at it more I think you have the right idea. I think I will just clean it up really well and put it back in... Thanks for the sanity check...

Some Cast Blast paint work wonders on the rear end housings.... LukesVette 2007-04-06 20:27:57

Or strip it down and send it off to have it powder coated in an aluminum/clearcoated finish. It's durable and a heck of a lot easier to clean and maintain the finish.
I should have done it to mine when I had it apart.
That's my .02 cents
