The power steering unit on my '72 starting leaking.  Does anyone know if this can be replaced by someone like me that's more or less a backyard mechanic?  Do I need any kind of special tool to pull it off?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you.

All components are reatively easily replaceable. No special tools necessary.  What is leaking... pump, assist ram.

Don't positive, but it looks like the pump.  And I'm not sure, but when I say the pump, I think that's the container that holds the fluid.  Is that correct?

I replaced my whole system only to find during disassembly that the hose from the bottom of the pump makes a sharp bend and it was leaking out of the "pinch".  It did restore "feel" to the steering though.

Red72, I'm disappointed.Ouch

In the Spring 07 SharkBytes(found under the fun tab) I wrote two articles, one on a power steering install from scratch and one for a refresh with new pump and hoses.  Both articles have lots of pix that will show you how to get 'er done!Thumbs%20Up

Dennis........
You're just the man I want to chat with. My T/T steering works fine but I sometimes feel/hear a creak or popping sound when turning the wheel with the car sitting still or very low speed like parking or turning into a driveway or garage.....steering or front end work needed?
Anybody......please chime-in.
Thanks...Rich

Control arm bushings...or a crack in the frame. Check the welds around where the control arms are bolted to the frame, especially the lower ones...they have a tendency to crack at the welds.
Also, look at the bracket on the driver side that the steering ram bolts to. It can also cause cracks in the frame around the bolts.
