Does anyone know a good way to remove the pully off the power steering pump?

I have the pump out of the car and I can't even get the nut loose.

You need one of these:
I rented one a few years ago. The nut should come off by whacking a box wrench with a hammer, a quick "shock".

Used a simple impact wrench. Once the nut was loose, the pulley just fell off....of course some PB Blaster helps. Special nut, mine was the original "egg shaped do-hicky". Replacements have a nylon lock.....

Getting it back on and not have it come loose is the big challenge after the repair.....

While I am on this subject, the alignment of the pulley on my P/S pump to the crank pulley seems a bit odd. Nothing is bent, everything goes 'round correctly, but the P/S pulley appears to be not perfectly parallel with the belt. Anybody have an idea why this is not lining up? The altenator belt just barely misses the P/S belt guard, I think this is ok though. Maybe after the engine job, some dimension has changed or a spacer of some sort is missing. Thanks |headscratch|

Just a guess. Did you replace the pump and reuse the pulley? I ask this because I believe 75 and up use the pressed on pulley while earlier use a tapered shaft and the locknut. You mentioned having a problem getting it tight. Could you have put a tapered pulley on a press fit shaft? Or a press fit pulley on a tapered shaft which might make it not go onto the shaft far enough? Does it seem further forward than it should?

I got it off, after I finally got the nut loose then the pulley I used a rubber mallet and it came right off. On to the next step.

Two threads going here.
Replaced the pump and re used the old pulley. ( 72 SB )

The pulley goes around perfectly straight, but the pulley is not parallel to the crank. Maybe I can move the bracket under the motor mount to bring that end out or in to make it parallel??? Never checked this.

I am concerned that it will wear the belt and eventually throw the thing 2AM in rain on a trip out of town.

It should be in line. The offset will cause wear at best, and toss the belt at high rpm at worse.

There are two ways. One, make sure the pulley is seated in the correct spot on the shaft, once you are sure the shaft is correct.
Next, you can shim the pump to the correct postion with the pump mounts.
