Found  a puddle of red fluid on the garage floor on drivers side just inside of front wheel. Friend who is mechanic at Toyota looked under and says its dripping from rack and pinion. Car is a 79 and was in Phoenix and is now in Vegas. Suggestions? Maybe a dried out seal? or the whole rack has to be replaced?
thanks
richard

Has the car been driven lately - or sat for awhile? The seals could be dired out some  and with recent use - leak . Are you sure its from the rack- pinion. - could it ben a brakeline -caliper -drip?? You can "dust" the suspected fitting with powder and then watch for wetting of the powder -this should confirm which fitting/seal is leaking . That we be MY first step . Find the leak first -

Hi Richard,  Our cars aren't equipped with a rack and pinion steering system unless it has a conversion kit such as Steeroids?  If its the stock system.. and its not a leaking from a hose... there's a good chance its probably the steering control valve based on the location of the leak.  Check out the link to a picture of one below... does it look like that?

They have rebuild kits for the valve itself... or you can replace the valve with a new one or remanufactured one.
