Topic: Rear Brake rotors 72

Question - I took of the drivers side rear brake rotor. The inside surface has two perfectly shaped groves approximately 1/3 the distance appart and of equar depth - Almost looks like the rotor was made this way - Or did the previous owner not change pads soon enough - new pads were in place - Inner pad worn into the two groves

time for a new rotor.. and pads
If the pads are good, the last set was not for quite some time. Ben's right. Now you need both.
But if there is plenty of pad and the brakes operate okay, you could hold off a bit. Best to just fix it. Of all things on the car the three most important are brakes, steering and tires. If you can't control it there is no reason to start the engine. (There is the instructor in me again)

Hank, I said it, and I mean it. But I myself have heard about fudging it a bit. Well I have heard about it. After all I do know better. Let's just say I have done some interesting noteworthy things. From a car guy like myself, you may expect certain endevors.
Ken, I don't doubt that you meant it. we've all pushed it when we shouldn't have. I remember saying the same thing to my sons that my Dad said to me, " what's the matter with you? you better get that fixed. do you know what you're risking?" I think it's testosterone poisoning.
I once bought an old Beetle that was an engine donor for my VW Camper Bus. The bug had a bad clutch cable. The pedal laid on the floor. I started it in first gear, shifted without the pedal, and drove it 20 miles to the shop. Steering was sloppy as could be, but I just wanted the engine.
The engine out of the Bus ran on 3 instead of 4 (no compression) so I stuck it back in the bug when I was done. And for the first and only time destroyed the accellerator cable in the process. Now the only working pedal was the brake.
I tied a string to the throttle, ran it out of the louvers on the hood, went to a piece of wire on the bumper, in through the left side rear window, and tied it to the sun visor.
I drove the thing home with a string, sloppy steering, and brake pedal. Quite a trip. Bought the bug for 100, sold it for 50 with the bad engine.
A perfect example of what you should never do!

My first car was a $50 bug, no brakes!
I still drove it, without telling my dad it didnt have any brakes using the emergency brake for over year.
I ended up selling it to a buddy who drove it the same way for a loooong time, he even delivered papers and pizzas in that car.
Granted, it was a small town in Minnesota in the 60's and there is NO WAY my son would get away with it.
BTW, my son(18 yrs old, active duty USN) does not have a DL for the next 10 months......street racing his SATURN!!!!!

e-hodges, my son is stationed just up 95 from you at Kings Bay. he'll be losing his driving priveledges soon also. he'll be on patrol on the Wyoming.

I ordered a new set of rotors,pads and E-Brake hardware - since it is apart might as well do it right
