Rear Brakes

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
Need some tips on getting the rear Disc off.  Mine are rusted on I think.  The emergency break adjustment is rusted and I need to get access to it.  In order to see what can be done.

I have used rust bust but it does not seem to do me a lot of good.  Any tips? bigger hammer?  what should I be careful about?

Hope you don't take this as a stupid question, but I am guessing that you removed (drilled out) the rivets that hold the rotor to the hub? If they are out:

Shoot some PB Blaster in the rivet holes;  

Wait 10 min;

Big hammer to tap around the hub to loosen things up some;

Then use 2 big screwdrivers and stick them in the slots of the rotor and try to wiggle the rotor from side to side to free free from the e brake shoes...

Worked for me

The front have rivets in them the rear have five holes so the backs have been off.  The car only has 44,000 miles on it sat out a lot.  I assume you can put a lot of pressure on the slots on the rotor?
 Never thought about spraying into the holes where the rivets were.

This is even more stupid - But I am assuming that the calipers have been removed.  I just took the rears off mine One one the double screwdriver worked easily - the other I simply used a gentle nudge of a screwdriver between the back of the rotor and the trailing arm - off slid the rotor . Definately used some sort of rust-buster in the rivet holes and around the stids and shaft .

PS I found out why my parking brake wasn't working - the PO -AKA Buba removed the springs and adjustment screw - just the shoes remained .   I am replacing with SS .

you may have to back off the emergency brake shoes to get the rotors off,just like any drum and shoe brakes they get ridges in the drum and hang onto the brake shoesThumbs Up

Thanks for the help.  Got the rotors off.  One adjusting nut for the emergency brake is frozen will be working on that.  The emergency brake shoes are in good shape on both wheels.  So now it is all about putting it back together.

Clap  Good deal!!

Clean up the e-brakes good with lube the normal points under the shoes. I'd clean and re-lube the adjusters while you're in there. Check you e brake cable also. They're cheap enough if it needs replacing and now's a good time to take care of it while you're in there...

and if youre not worried about originality...  install a stainless e brake kit...  you will be doing yourself and the next owner a huge favor

Before you put everything back together make sure that the "L" shaped lever that the cable connects to will pivot on the rivet that holds it together.  If the two pieces of the "L" lever do not pivot, the brakes will not work as they should.  Mine were rusted to the point that they may as well have been welded.
