Does anyone have any tips on removing the rear shock mount?  I am replacing the rear struts for the adjustable type.  I got the adjusting bolts out of the opposite end fairly easy.  I was able to get the nuts off and I have been beating these things all afternoon.  I finaly soaked them down with penitrating oil and called it a day.

Any words of wisdom would be appriciated!!

Thanks,

Mel

Mel,

You can buy a shock mount removal tool for $17 from any parts house, or you can beat them to death (like I did) & buy a set of replacements for $90.

http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5 Z50000050g~Z5Z5Z5ABAZQ~P16.95~~~~S1V11C676467851513321g~Z5Z5 Z5~Z5Z5Z50000050G

It would have been easier if I bought the tool & used some patience.

Good luck.......Anthony

Welcome to the wonderfull world of Corvette suspensions!!
A lot of folks do have a hard time getting the lower shock/strut mount off. Mine come off easily, but others are painfull. There is a tool that threads over the end of the mount that you can beat the crap out of, and not hurt the threads. Be aware, the mount has "splines" on one end, that mate to splines in the spindle support. This means you can't "twist" on it to help get it out.
Soak it well for as along as you can, and try again. Make sure you spray into the sides of the strut, as the shock mount is most likely rusted/stuck to the bushing in the strut rod, not the spindle support itself.

Start by gently(as in as hard as you can) hammering on the opposite side of the mount, like you are trying to put it IN, not take it out. A lot of times, this will break the bond, and allow the mount to come out.
Good luck!

Hey Mel,

Mine were also a pain to take off.  I took the castle nut, turned it around, and threaded it back on until the flat side was flush with the end of the shock mount.  I then smacked it until it came out.  I bought two new shock mounts to replace them though.

Thanks!!  I saw the tool as I was thumbing through the parts catalog.  I thought I might get lucky!!  I figuerd I would have to replace them after I got them out $$$$$.  I would be happy to, IF I COULD JUST GET THEM OUT!!!  I reversed the castle head nut and used a smaller bolt that fit inside as a drive pin.

I am waiting to order all the parts until I have everything apart!!  Also replacing the broken leaf spring and diff cover.

Thanks again Anthony, Dale and Joel.

I guess it will come out eventualy!!

I tried to beat mine out but gave up. In the end I took a hacksaw and cut between the spindle support and tie rod. Hope yours come apart.

when things are really stuck I hit it with a torch, gets it good and hot breaks up the rust, then hit it.

Not only are they splined like a lug nut bolt, but they have a D shaped shaft that fits into the spindle support,so it wont turn or twist

The torch idea is a good tip too... I soaked mine for a day or so and also heated them up.  My passenger side came out pretty easy, but my driver side was a pain.  Keep at it... They'll come out!

I'll try the torch the next chance I have to get out to the garage!!  I was going to order the removal tool, but I think I'll keep at it with the penitrating oil, torch and BIG hammer!!!!  They'll come out sooner or later!!

Thanks to all, you guys are the greatest
