During a discussion with another C3 owner he asked if I had replaced the stock rear spring on my 68 coupe with an aftermarket unit containing spring clips. He further stated that the OEM units are inherently dangerous as they can spin or twist. Does anyone know what he's talking about?

Someone should notify GM of this...they built over a half a million Sharks(not to mention the mid-years) with that spring design!!!
Theez I have never heard of! I know most of the aftermarket springs do have clamps around the leaves, but GM never did it on the originals. If the leaves are stacked properly, and the assembly bolted together properly, there is no danger of a problem.
How th' heck can the spring "twist", or "spin"?? It can't, unless the lower bracket that holds the spring to the diff. cover is loose, and that's not a design flaw...that's an installation error.

Some leaf springs will have one or more leafs rotate slightly from the center point. Then the leafs don't line up quite right. One leaf may stick out from the others by 1.4 inch or so. This is only cosmetic. It won't affect the operation of the spring. The straps prevent the springs from doing this. But the way the spring are mounted on our Vettes, this is very minor, and not worth metioning. Some vehicles can allow the sprng leafs to move almost an inch out of line at the end of the leafs. But these are two leaf systems with a narrow axle tube. Not our problem.
