I think my rear wheel bearings are making a humming noise on the road. At first I thought it was my diff, but I'm pretty sure that it's the right rear wheel bearings. I made several tight turns backwards, and there was a "clicking" during the right turn coming from the right rear. It looks like I'm going to take advantage of one of the rebuild offers, but just to be sure, if anyone else has learned from experience, let me know so I get another diff and not TA's. 82delight 2007-12-03 19:47:27

IF it is the wheel bearings making the "hum", you should be able to change the noise by turning the steering wheel slightly back and forth while driving. As the wheels react to the steering input, the noise should change.
A "clicking" when driving backwards could be just a brake pad tick, a parking brake noise, or a u-joint. I'm curious as to why you are driving backwards

If you are getting a "clicking" sound when you turn the car, I would lean toward a U-joint going south. I had a similar problem with an old Porsche. I know that Corvettes don't have that style joint in the rear suspension, but the sound of a joint going away is the same. Does it make this noise when you are oging forward? It could also be any of the things Joel mnetioned.
There is no substitute for low end torque!
I keep telling you guys.
TURN UP THE VOLUME ON THE RADIO.
Eventually, something will break and you will know what needs to be fixed.

Yeah thats what I usually did with my broncos!
I'm getting old or lazy or both and I don't much care for turning wrenchs on the side of the road with traffic whizzing past
. Not bad when your driving a stump jumper even worse when your baby is broke down. Not a lot of room to haul spare parts in her.

I always thought U-joints would clunk and then vibrate before the tell tale sound of a drive shaft smacking loose but you probably aren't gonna drive her to that point are ya
I just re-did all the u-joints in mine, not a lot of fun.

Add Cut Outs to the exhaust... Increased HP and no audible problems to be heard. Oddly enough things really do appear farther away in the Mirror...Tuxblacray 2007-12-05 16:20:56
Now joel....everybody has to practice driving backwards just in case !!
You're probably too young to remember the movie called the "BLOB".
In the movie, Steve McQueen drag-raced this guy in reverse...did a very nice job of it too. That way he could run from the blob either in forward or reverse...........practice, practice, practice !!

I love that movie! I remember watching this over and over as a kid!
But I don't remember ever hearing that ticking noise while Steve was goin backwards in the movie.

...the clicking sounds like a u-joint to me but the parking break also makes sense too. To check the wheel bearing jack up the car and try to move the wheel by placing your hands on the top and bottom and see if there is any "play" in teh wheel; then either side. If the wheel bearing is bad the should be enough movement to tell.

What ever you do, don't overlook checking the clutches in the posi rear end. They can make some weird noises and it sometimes sounds like its coming from somewhere else. SO while you are there checking everything else, have those checked at the same time. You don't want to do the job twice
