I'm in the middle of re-doing my front suspension on my 68 and I have both the upper and lower control arms off ready to remove the old bushings, I have done the same replacement about 15 years ago and it was he$#, I ended up using a torch to burn the old ones out. Now that we have the huge comunication tool called the internet I'm hoping some one can share an easier way.
Ant help will be appreciated. thanks

If you are very good with a torch, it not bad. I have done many bushings this way.

But it does stink and smoke.

You can use a sawsall and cut the bushings flat to the control arm, the drive the remainder out. This works fairly well, and is cleaner than old smokey.

It has been a couple years and I don't remember all the details, but I got me a 12 ton floor press to tackle that job.

Northern Tool +/- $150 plus shipping (and it is heavy).

If memory serves me right, I remember hearing about folks that torched out the old rubber and left the seat installed.

I installed new seats with poly bushings. The press made the job easy (or easier is probably more correcter |laugh| )

Rogue wave, you wouldn't have a picture of that setup would you? where do you apply the pressure and where did you back it up? I was going to try to press them out using a 6 ton Arbor press

Not always but sometimes I have found that letting someone else do the work is less frustraiting. Van Steel will does a great job and while it might not be the most economical avenue, its easier on the nerves and gets you back on the road much quicker then doing the work yourself. My two cents. Penny per side. |laugh|

went pretty easy..

I agree with after shark. I pulled out the bushings ok, but getting them back in is the hard part. The uppers are a piece of cake, but not the double ended lower ones. The lower ones are a royal PIA because of the double lip. I bent the crap out of one trying to get the lower ones in, gave up, and bit the bullet, and sent them to van steel. Not terribly expensive, but much easier and didn't hurt myself, and they are installed correctly. I had to replace the shaft, so it cost more than just letting to dudes at van steel fix
em up......painted them nice too.... |hammer| |hammer| |hammer| |hammer| |hammer| |hammer| |wink|
