It shouldn't matter what size (16, 17, 18, etc) rim you have as long as the circle dimension of the tire is near the stock dimension (meannig you will have a lower profile tire with the larger rim size).  Width will be more of the issue.  But as Joel says, when in doubt try it!

No, I think Big Al will be riding where the spare normally goes.

Thanks for the reminder though. I need to check to see if I have air in the spare. Heck, I need to check to see if I have a spare.

Seriously - the advice was great and a good reminder to all to  "check your spare tire" ( for the car- not the beer belly)
...........If you have a '78 up car, the tubs are different, anyway. They used a "space-saver" spare, and the tubs were designed to be used with either the smaller spare, or the normal road tires.
Have any of you, with pre 78s, tried using the space saver spare instead of a full size tire for a spare? Are they even available?

I need to replace my old spare and was going to see if a smaller 15", other than the 225, would work without further lowering the tub.

Any thoughts?

thanks

The main thing to remember when using a smaller diameter spare is to run it on the front axle only.  If you have a flat on the rear axle put the spare on the right front first, then put that tire on the where the flat is.  Doing that keeps the rear axle insync and removes worries about tearing up the posi.  And be careful not to slam on the brakes hard - the different sizes up front will make an emergency stop even more exciting!

I bought a space-saver spare on eBay for the bride's '78 T/A mostly because the full size one took up SO much of the trunk.
