1970..............the size tire on my spare is 225/70 and doesn't want to fit without lowering the ride height of the carrier. What is the correct size?

The original size for the '70 model was F70-15. Crossing that over to the metric system will give you a tire that is a bit wider, which means the tire tub has to be adjusted down somewhat.
My '74 came with GR70-15s, and the metric equivalent is a 225-70R15. I have to drop the tub down to get a spare that size on mine, too....
