My '79 speedometer quit working and I suspect one of the two cables is broken as the needle began jumping just prior to quiting.
I have removed the front bezel on the instument panel and the allen screws holding the speedometer faceplate. But I am reluctant to pull the faceplate forward to get access to the back of the speedometer in fear of bending it or distorting it. Any tips?
Secondly, how can one tell whether the upper or lower cable is the bad actor?
Thanks in advance.

Remove the cables from the trasducer and see if you can slide the inner steel wire out.

I have a 79 vette also same proublem found it to be a bad transducer, Disconect cable from it (The cable that goes from the transducer to your speed-o- meter) and spin it to see if the needel moves. If it moves you know that cable is good. Than take the other cable loose from both ends and spin it, if it spins I would say its your transducer.
Good Luck

On the way back from BG (somewhere in northern Illinois) the odometer gave it up on "The Toy" so I'm going to be tearing into this towards the fall. The speedo continues to work, but the miles just don't click over. Hopefully I can get the trip meter working as well with this project.
I had that problem when I first got my 78 , no speedo the lower cable from tranny was broken off inside the transducer, had to get the transducer out of the car that was a pain, the little plastic end of the speedo cable was jambed inside the imput shaft of the unit ,had to carefully drill the plastic so not to tear up the brass inside the imput shaft then pick out the rest.cleaned up the inside of the transducer put it back together, put in a new cable, and wala it works. try it
