What about using some kind of Teflon type spray on them? I don't think it will mess with the bushings like WD40 would.

Any petroleum based lube will accelerate the deterioration of rubber, whether on a tire, or bushings. Synthetics based lubes will work much better...Teflon might be a good choice, depending on the manner in which it is delivered.
Sounds like Joe has urethane bushings, so spraying them will help temporarily, but the final solution would be to smear them with the proper grease.
