Topic: Steering box rag joint problem
in Forum: C3 Engines, Driveline and Handling
I have a problem with the rag joint connection on my 1971 Corvette. I added power steering to the car and the new rag joint is too short to connect the the column and box shafts with the replacement GM style rag joint. I tried pulling down the steering column shaft but it won't come out anymore. I saw a long version of the lower rag joint in a restoration manual. Is this the best bet to solve the problem? Anybody have an extra lower rag joint, long style, for sale? Here is a picture of the long style rag joint. I only need the lower or left portion of the rag joint shown in the picture. Thanks!

I updated the link and added the picture here. Thanks for getting back with me. Happy to pay the shipping! Hope it's the one you have... One bolt and it comes off the steering box.
Nice Vette you have there! Like the wheels. I'm getting there slowly.
Well if what you are looking for are the metal pieces that make up the rag joint, I have those. You will need to get a new rubber rag. If memory serves me correctly there is one bolt that holds the joint to the steering box shaft and another four bolts that tie it to the steering column joint.
Is that what you are looking for? let me Know I will see if I can dig them out of misc parts pile I have. If you give me some time I will take them into work and have them bead blasted for you. No charge of course. You will just need to clean off the oil I will put on them to prevent rusing and apply what ever paint or plating you like.

That would be great! Thanks for helping me out. I will order a repair kit for it this week. Just let me know what the shipping chrges are? I will send you a private message with my address. THANKS!
I tried several ways to pry mine down without success. After just getting everything painted, rebuilt and back together, I think I was a little too gentle with it. Once I found the long rag version I decided that was the way to go. The long one will go on each side a lot further and make a better connection. Thanks to After Shark I can get this project a little closer to completion.

in the future.. if anyone needs one of these.. or a steering box.. i have an extra from a 69 with PS..
I'm looking for a steering box for my 79....maybe.
