Could someone tell me what would be involved, mechanically and monetarily in changing power steering to manual in a '71? Not all the minute details, just basically what I'd be getting into. It may not be feasible, but I just don't like power steering.
Thanks, Dwain

Very easy. Remove the power steering pump, brackets, belts, etc. Remove the center link in the steering linkage with one for a car with manual steering. You may want to change the steering box. It may be a different steering ratio, which will change effort. But the one now on the car may respond quicker, if it's different in your year.
Done.
The only cost is the steering center link. Unless you decide to change the steering box to a different ratio.

It's the other way around that gets tricky. Not agonizing, just involved.

Mine came from the factory without power steering or power brakes. And I LOVE the way this car feels. If you really like to "feel the road" I think you'll be glad you ditched the PS.
OK, so it's kinda "Old School." Can't help it - so am I.

Thanks to both of you. My hopes weren't dashed! lol. Lumberjack, your '72 looks exactly like a '70 I sold back in'82. Been kicking myself in the butt ever since. It had manual steering and felt much better on the road. At least I know now it's something that can be done and I can keep both arms! I almost lost both if them after spending over two years getting my '71 out of the body shop, then into another to get it done semi right. Thanks again, Dwain
